"On Wednesday last a squaw had both legs cut off by the cars of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, between Steptoe and Reno. The locomotive coming this way brought out a number of empty flats and gravel cars, dumping the dirt at the grade of Mr. Brown's. The squaw was sitting on the forward end of the gravel car quite close, and as she saw the train parting she jumped off to get on the cars still attached to the engine. In doing so, the forward cars, which were still moving backward, struck her, knocked her down and ran over both legs, grinding them into mincemeat. Seven other Indians who were on the train at the time took charge of her, and when Superintendent Yerrington arrived and offered to take her to the hospital they refused to permit him. Next morning the wounded squaw and her companions had disappeared."
