The bomb-brig, a schooner, and 2 or 3 armed sloops left Newport harbor, landed upwards of 200 marines, sailors, and Negroes at East ferry on Conanicut, marched to West ferry, set houses on fire, retreated burning houses along the road and nearby, driving out women and children. Specific losses: Widow Hull one house; Joseph Clarke, Esq; two houses and one barn; Thomas Fowler one house, barn and crib full of corn; Benjamin Ellery two houses, store, and barn; Benjamin Remington two houses; John Gardner, Esq; one house and tanyard; Thomas Hutchinson one house; Widow Franklin two; Abe Franklin one; Benedict Robinson one. All plundered of beds, apparel, furniture; some women stripped of clothes. Capt. Wallace commanded. Local minute-men had left; 40 or 50 new soldiers present. Vessels returned to harbor with livestock.
