Thoroughgoing C. I. O.
Purge at the California
Meeting of Federation

By Federated Press

LONG BEACH, Cal.-(FP)-This is Dave Beck's convention, and Ed Vandeleur's, this meeting of delegates to the California State Federation of Labor.

That the will of the west coast teamster chief and of the state federation head-now locked in war to the finish with Harry Bridges and the C. I. O.-would be done became apparent in the early hours of the meeting.

A purge had been announced and expected. It took place, in a very thoroughgoing fashion, the very first day. Delegates of unions and central bodies suspected of C. I. O. sympathies were ousted without ceremony.

Indicative of the temper of the gathering was the beating up of Pres. John Shelly of the San Francisco Labor Council and a companion, John Byrnes of the San Francisco can makers. They identified their assailants as Los Angeles teamsters. Shelly had held A. F. of L. and C. I. O. elements together, to the last possible moment, in the Frisco labor body.

A proposal that the longshore-teamster fight over warehousemen be settled by Pres. Roosevelt was made by George Kidwell of the San Francisco bakery drivers. It is understood that Kidwell had F. D. R.'s acceptance of the proposal. His union was the only teamsters' affiliate to march in the San Francisco Labor Day parade, the others boycotting it because of C. I. O. participation.

Main other business of the convention is the question of organizing Los Angeles into as strong a union town as San Francisco. Plan is to go into both unorganized and C. I. O. fields in hopes of making the city an A. F. of L. bulwark as an offset to C. I. O. inroads in other parts of the state.
