Boston, 27th August, 1831.
Dear Sir:—The republicans of this State have long and carefully noted your political course, and in the various important and elevated stations you have occupied, they have invariably found you sustaining those great political truths, proclaimed by the sages of the revolution, and maintained by the blood of its Patriots, and which at the present day are held dear by every true hearted American.
They feel proud that the Democracy of New-England is represented in the Executive Councils of the Nation by a Son so distinguished for his moral, intellectual and political worth, and are grateful to the Patriot Chief for the honor paid to New-England in your appointment.
As a testimony of the respect which the friends of the Administration have for your character, and the high estimation in which they hold you as a citizen, and public officer, we in behalf of ourselves and associates, invite you to partake of a public dinner on your return from Portsmouth to this City, and request that you will be kind enough to indicate the day it may best suit your convenience to attend.
With very great respect,
We have the honor to be,
Your most obedient
And humble servants,

Portsmouth, N. H. August 31st, 1831.
Gentlemen,—Your kind invitation to a public dinner at Boston, on my return to the South, has been received. It would give me great satisfaction to partake of the hospitality of my political friends in your city; but indispensable engagements in the removal of my family, and the demands of official duty, must forbid the indulgence.
Be pleased to accept for yourselves and associates, my warmest acknowledgements for this mark of respect, and allow me to assure you, that few recollections could ever be more grateful to me than those of having united my humble efforts with yours to sustain, in any degree, "those great political truths, proclaimed by the sages of the Revolution, and maintained by the blood of its patriots," and which, thanks to a benignant Providence, bid fair ere long to pervade and reform the whole civilized world.
With much regard and respect,
Your ob't. servant,
LEVI WOODBURY.
To David Henshaw, and others.
