PHILADELPHIA—(ANP)—Deprived of one championship on a baton passing boner that cost them the half mile championship relay, the favored swifties of the University of Illinois redeemed themselves with a brilliant triumph in the classic mile relay, that closed the show Saturday in the 52nd Annual Penn. Relay carnival on Franklin field before 30,000 track enthusiasts.
Herbert McKenley, formerly of Boston college and now sporting the colors of Illinois university which were winners of three out of four championships, was returned the star of the two day carnival by the brillance of his performances It was McKenley anchoring the half-mile relay Saturday afternoon, whose faulty pickup of the baton from Jack Pierce forced the disqualification of Illinois for over-running the exchange zone, despite the fact that the Big Ten entry made the fastest time: 1:28.5 seconds in the heats.
Hours later McKenley took off for the anchor leg in the mile started with the four yard lead and whirled his 440 in the sensational time of 46.9 seconds.
This touch of authentic class gave Illinois the mile title by a smashing 15-yard margin over Navy, which beat Michigan by five yards, with Duke Fordham, Ohio State and N. Y. U. trailing.
Bill Carter of Tuskegee Army Air base, 1942 I. C. 4-A indoor 60 yard champion, came out of limbo to win the two-yard dash with a 19.8 century He came from behind and nailed Charles Jupiter, of Howard university, with Bill Mathis, Negro Illinois Big Ten champion in a blanket finish They shunted Bob Fenimore, Oklahoma A and M. all-American halfback into fourth place.
In the relays, Lincoln university was second in the Class B Mile championship won by Villanova. In the college class Morgan State won the first race in 3:31.7 with Hampton second. Lincoln won the third in 3:27.7
On Friday, McKenley sparked Illinois to wins in the sprint Medley by turning in a 49 second quarter and in the 440 relay ran on the quarter mile team with one white ace, Jack Pierce. The time of 41.6 has been exceeded only once by Texas in 1936. The medley winning time was 3:29.7
