Full Text
President Jefferson has directed a nolle prosequi to be entered on the action commenced in the instance of the Senate of the United States against William Duane, for a scandalous libel on that honourable body. However extraordinary, even at this day, this may appear, it is nevertheless true. And the Senate thus insulted is the same body of which Mr. Jefferson was President, and to whom, in his farewell address, he "returned his grateful thanks for all the instances of attention and respect with which they had been pleased to honour him!"—That Senate, whose support he solicited to attend him in his new office: and which he declared he should consider as giving it the happiest auspices; and that Senate, to whom, in addition to the "expressions of his dutiful regard as a body," he "asked leave to mingle his particular wishes for the health and happiness of the individuals who composed it; and the tender of his cordial and respectful adieu." Who could believe, after all these honied compliments, that this President would loose from his bonds the false and impudent libeller of so much acknowledged excellence? However incredible, we repeat, it is nevertheless true.
