SONNET.

While freedom warms the vassal's soul,
And lights him to destroy his chain;
While clangorous war's rude thunders roll,
And carnage clothes broad Europe's plain:
While man renew'd, in smiles contemn,
The dangers of a despot's frown;
Or Paine's licentious mobs condemn,
The sacred homage of the crown:
While revolution's phrenzy jars,
Those consuls hoard the world must lose.
And tyrants, authors of the wars,
To heal the wound, their drops diffuse;
Columbians whiff their mild segars,
And calmly talk about the news.
