Event Details
French newspapers see in the recent visit of King Alfonso of Spain to Rome a probable alliance between Spain and Italy. The papers reason that kings do not go to the trouble of visiting each other just for the sociability of the thing and this suggested alliance is the only thing they can figure out as the object of the present visit. The possibility of an alliance between Italy and Spain has its discouragement because of the fact that France is so largely dependent upon her African colonies for the strengthening of her armies, and with a hostile combination between Italy and Spain the navigation of the Mediterranean by troop transports, would soon become impossible, especially if England should also be unfriendly.
