The following is the most melancholy Affair that has happened in the Memory of the oldest Man in these Parts, viz. On the 20th ult. Admiral Medley with the Men of War, India, and other Merchant Ships, anchored in Torbay. On the 27th, in the morning, the Admiral made a Signal to sail, the Wind being S. E. and a great swelling Sea. Some were obliged to cut, others to slip, or part with their Cables, which put them in great Confusion. The Royal George, Capt. Field, for India, ran foul of the Cape Coast, Capt. Burrish for Africa. The latter sank, and is entirely lost, but the Crew are saved. The former lost her Head and Cut-Water and is gone to Portsmouth to refit. The Expedition, Wilson, from London, is ashore near the Berryhead, and bulged; the Crew, and part of the Cargo, saved. The Tyger, White, from London for Newfoundland, is lost on the Berryhead, and 70 Soldiers, 6 Sailors, and 6 Women, are drowned: Capt. White broke his Legs in saving himself on the Rocks. The Maidstone Man of War ran foul of the Mary, Edmonds, from Poole for Oporto, as he lay at Anchor; and carried away her Bowsprit, Main and Mizen Masts, and did her much other Damage: She is coming in here to refit. A Man of War ran foul of the King of Portugal, Capt. Hughes, for Lisbon, and broke his Bow, and must come in to refit. The Ulysses, Haydon, from London for the Streights, was on board the Barracuta, for Jamaica, and broke her Bowsprit, and received more Damage. Capt. Haydon came in last Night to refit: The Barracuta is gone to Sea with the Fleet. The Catherine, Clark, from London for Africa, remains in Torbay, having received Damage at Sea before putting in. The Jacob, Brittan, from St. Kitts for London, came in the 27th ult.
