THOS. STURGIS REPLIES.
He Explains His Statements About
Losses of Trail Cattle.
Cheyenne, March 14.-To Messrs. J. W. Snyder and John H. Durbin: GENTLEMEN.-I have read your letter addressed to me in the morning paper, and from the publicity of your inquiry I presume you wish equal publicity in the reply.
I stated to the editor of the Breeders Gazette that "in some localities in Wyoming and Nebraska the loss of trail cattle from Texas, Iowa and Minnesota would be from 25 to 50 per cent." This opinion is based on the reports of reliable parties carefully verified. I did not state and do not know whether this would or would not be the average loss in trail cattle from Texas and the states, but, stated as above "in some localities." I believe it to be absolutely true.
As regards my having made such a statement about range (acclimated) cattle, as stated by the Denver News, the report is absolutely false. The winter has been more favorable than any for three years past upon range cattle and the loss among them is decidedly less than the average of late years.
I always intend to have a reason for what I state and am always ready to stand by any statement I make. Yours truly,
THOS. STURGIS.
