Two miners, Jonathan Thompson and George Douglas, while blasting a drift in solid scar limestone at Alston Moor, discovered a live full-grown rat in a small cavity. They killed it trying to capture it alive. The surrounding strata was perfectly solid. The excavation was in a garden owned by T. Dickinson, Esq.
