Full Text
The result of our negociations with Spain is problematical, partly on account of the natural adherence of Spain to her own selfish interests: but more, perhaps, from the artificial prejudices and obstacles produced by design. Never probably, were more indefatigable efforts used, on any occasion, than there have been to defeat the object of our present negociation. The interested policy of Great-Britain and all her partizans, the resentment of the discarded Spanish Minister, and the passions of a certain party among ourselves, have been, and still are, in full operation. God grant their consequences may not be a rupture with Spain and her ally France, and an alliance of co-operation with Great-Britain.
