The London Daily News, Bucharest correspondent telegraphs: I have written the following as I received it, and from the terrible accounts which fugitives continually bring over the Balkans, I fear it must be only too true:
On July 31, the day of the Russian evacuation of Eski-Saghra the Turks ordered that all Christians, men women and children, should be shot as they left their houses. Those who remained within were burnt alive. The order was given to burn down and destroy every particle of Christian property in the place. Many leading Turkish merchants took part in the affair. One dispatched a large number of Bashi Bazoiks all over the Tehirpan district. This district is one of the richest in that part of Turkey. It contains a very large proportion of Christian inhabitants, over 30 churches and 500 schools and colleges, all of which have been burnt. The destruction extended to the villages of Bodhdan, Mahateri, Rani and many others in all about sixty, containing from 150 to 200 families each. Scarcely 50 persons escaped alive. The Bulgarian fugitives at Gabrova and Selvi estimate that from 12,000 to 15,000 Christians have been massacred in Eski Saghra and the Tehirpan district alone. Soldiers were posted along the road from Eski Saghra to Kazanlik with orders to shoot everybody passing.
2 Cistern Half Full of Dead Men, Women and Children.
Last evening one of the most horrible reports that has yet been circulated on our streets, became current, but it was of such a terrible nature that people talked about it in low voices and with a feeling of dread. A deep well or cistern had been found about fifteen miles from the city, to which attention had been called by a sickening stench arising from it, and an investigation disclosed the fact that the cistern was half full of the bodies of men, women and children, the tangled bodies having been thrown in all positions and conditions. Some had their throats cut; others were stabbed through the hearts; others again had their brains blown out. In a house near by was found secreted about $15,000 in money and a large lot of jewelry and other valuables, and an old hag, who when arrested jeered at her captors, and declared the money found was only a little pocket change belonging to 'her boys.'—San Antonio (Texas) Express.
A sharp dodge was successfully played upon a citizen of York at Indianapolis the other day. While changing cars he was addressed by a business like gentleman as follows: "Where are you going?"
"To Kansas City, Mo.," he replied.
"Have you a ticket? if so, let me see it," said the other fellow.
The passenger promptly handed the ticket over to the business like man, who examined it carefully, and then turned and hurried off. It was but a few minutes afterward when the traveler discovered that a common piece of paper had been returned to him.
During a thunder storm at Paterson, N. J. on the 14 inst., Henry Fried, a German, and a boy and girl, took refuge under a chestnut tree. The tree was struck by lightning and Fried was instantly killed. The others were rendered unconscious and subsequently recovered. Fried's head was turned blue, but otherwise bore no marks. The boy's leg was burned and turned blue. The lower part of the girl's body is covered with blue spots. Fried was thirty-nine years of age, and leaves a wife and six children.
