Full Text

Aug. 17. By Letters from the Hague we learn, That on the 20th past, Mr. Trevor received an Express from the Army, by which we learn, that the Governor of Ostend had made a Sally with all imaginable Success; that about 900 of the Besiegers, with 10 Officers of Distinction, had been killed and wounded, and that under favour of the said Sally, the Garrison had found Means to open a Dyke, which has laid the rest of the Country under Water, which poured down with such Violence that it sunk a French Vessel with Artillery in the Channel of Bruges, and the Garrison ruined all the Batteries which the French had raised against the Town, and rendered all their Cannon useless; notwithstanding of which, the Town was so ruined, and the Garrison so weakened, that it surrendered the next Day.

We hear also, that the Garrison of Newport had attacked and defeated 200 Gunners who were going from Dunkirk, to be employed before Ostend. 'Tis assured the Allies are 40,000 strong. The French are in Motion to approach Antwerp, and are advanced as far as Lippello. 'Tis certain the French have had but little Success since we had a Squadron cruising at the Entrance of the Channel.
