Man Defends Self, Stays Out Of Jail

DETROIT - (ANP) - Obie Williams, 38, acted as his own defense counsel last week and kept himself out of jail.

Williams was charged with assault and battery on the complaint of Mrs. Helen Witten, 33.

Mrs. Witten told police that Williams slugged and robbed her of $7.

Williams told the court that he had given Mrs. Witten $7. He said he went into an apartment and she asked him to wait outside, stating, "I'll be right back."

Williams said when he saw Mrs. Witten two hours later, she was angry and struck her and took his money.

"Your honor," said Williams, "may I have a word?" "I have been in prison and it is hard to obtain employment. I have a good job now and wouldn't like to lose it. Will you give me probation?"

"All right," said Judge Gillis, "one year's probation, $100 cost and pay back the seven dollars."
