Intimations are made in several letters from Europe, that "Great discontents prevail in Prussia, particularly Berlin, relative to that country having made itself a member, in the combination against France. It is there loudly said, and complained of in the bitterest terms, that the treasures which old Frederick the Great had amassed with so much care, are squandering in a war without end or object: and which cannot but be ruinous to the Prussian government. It is certain, that the late King of Prussia left 7,000,000 of pounds sterling in his public chest, the greater part, if not the whole of which, will be irrecoverably expended in the Quixotic expedition against France, with the mortification, at the same time, of not making the least impression upon that powerful and animated republic.—Could the ghost of Frederick the Great return to earth, it would, no doubt, lament sadly to see those sums expended so wantonly, for the sake of hoarding up which, when living, he almost denied himself a second suit of clothes, fought some of the bloodiest battles that modern history has recorded; and squeezed his subjects till they became as poor as oppression could possibly make them."
