Event Details
Vast emigration from England to France since the restoration of the Bourbons, calculated at not less than 50,000 persons, many of the class of gentry whose income amounted from 100 to 1,000 l. per annum. A man with 200 l. a year can live as handsomely & luxuriously in France as in England for 600 l. Comparisons of costs: loaf for 4d. in France vs 1s. in England, beef 2d. per lb., fowl 4d., turkey 2s., best wine 1s. vs 5s. Climate preferable, French people cheerful and suave. Inducement due to government taxes, tythes, and poor rates. Nearly all foreigners who took refuge in England during continental troubles have left, drawing monies from banks and funds.
