According to the last letters from Paris, they still flattered themselves that the King would hold a Bed of Justice in a few days, wherein it was expected that his Majesty would abolish the last Twentieth penny established during the late war, and also reduce the entries of that capital, as well as some other imposts, for the ease and relief of his subjects.
It was said at Versailles when the last letters came away, that the court was going to borrow eighty millions of livres on life annuities.
They write from Brest, that the court of France have lately ordered the number of seamen on the marin list, to be augmented with 12,000 men.
It is rumoured that enquiry has been made at a public office to know in what time they could victual out 10,000 men in case of emergency.
In consequence of the prudent measures now taking the state of the British navy is in a way of being vastly superior to what has ever been experienced in former years. Exclusive of a thorough survey of all his Majesty's ships of war, contracts have been entered into with every province, island, and settlement in America ; where men of war may be supplied with provisions, rigging, and all manner of naval stores, on any emergency: the same contract is also in force in most foreign states in Europe, so that let a King's ship put in any where, he is sure of being supplied.
