Unfinished Business.

Notwithstanding the whigs during the last Presidential canvass made no declaration of principles 'for the public eye,' no sooner was the result of the contest fairly known than their papers and leading politicians began to direct the people to 'look ahead' to the 'good time coming,' when the entire whig policy should be in full operation in administering the government—when protection should take the place of a revenue tariff, a great money regulator be substituted for the independent treasury, a system of general internal improvements should be adopted, and, from the tone of whiggery, one unaccustomed to their vaunting would have supposed that there was to be no poverty, no suffering, no slavery throughout all our wide extended borders. Well, more than half of Old Zack's Presidential term has passed, and yet the people have seen little of the glory of whiggery, not one of its measures in operation. And the balance of the term promises nothing for the success of their principles. On the 4th of March '53 Gen. Taylor will retire from the Presidency, and the promises of whiggery will remain all unfulfilled, and may be set down on the list of unfinished business.

About the only business that bids fair to be finished by the present administration is that of Galphinizing the Treasury.

We return our sincerest thanks to Mr. E. W. Lincoln, of Franklin, for a couple of fine hickory walking-sticks.—When our form is bent with age, and time has written 'old age' upon our foreheads, we will not forget the kind giver.
