IMPORTANT.
The President of the Senate of the United States, says the Georgetown Federal Republican, has received a letter from a highly respectable correspondent in Havana, dated December 17th. It states that a large British fleet, with 10,000 troops on board, were at the mouth of the Mississippi, 100 miles from New-Orleans, on the 12th of that month. This great city has shared the fate of Washington, or General Jackson has immortalized himself. There is too much reason to apprehend the succours expected from Kentucky, did not arrive in time to co-operate with the forces already collected for the defence of New-Orleans.
