Saddened Mercer Students Attend Mascot's Funeral

MACON G SNS The whole campus, student body, faculty and alumni of Mercer College were mourning the death of 74-year old Lee Battle, campus mascot and for 40 years an employee of the school.

Campus leaders took an active part in Mr. Lee's funeral held from the Union Baptist church at noon Saturday. His body had lain in state in the university's new funeral room in the theology building an hour and a half prior to the rites.

Mr. Lee, who died Saturday, remembered the name of every graduate who went through the halls of Mercer during his four decades of service variously known about the campus as "Dr. Lee" and Dr. Battle.

He received wide attention several years ago when the school dedicated an issue of the Cyclops, its student publication, to him.

It was disclosed by President Dowell that at one time the trustees had thought of burying Mr. Lee on the university's campus, but abandoned the plan after his request that he be buried at the side of his mother in Forsyth.
