In April of 1938 the trustees of Tuskegee voted to make available for the Carver Laboratories and Museum a building constructed in 1911 and formerly used as the shoe laundry. Along with the formal notification of new quarters for Dr. Carver's work and contributions of 47 years his assistant, A. W. Curtis, Jr. formulated plans for establishing the Carver Creative Research Laboratories. These plans for the laboratories are an attempt to assure the expansion and perpetuation of the pioneering work done here at Tuskegee institute in farm chemurgy.
Need for the Carver Creative Research Laboratories was set forth in the prospectus as follows: 1. So that this heritage (Dr. Carver's 43 years of valuable scientific and educational contributions to the world, his invaluable collections) of Tuskegee Institute will not be lost. 2 So that scientific contributions will continue to be made to improve the economic and educational welfare of the South and nation 3 So that Tuskegee Institute will continue to offer unique and original programs, and will be one of the motivating forces in the establishment of the era of creative research which will be the basis upon which the Industrial South will be built. 4 So that men and women of ability along creative research lines who do not have the opportunity at the present time, will through the establishment of the Carver Creative Research Laboratories be given an opportunity that heretofore has been closed to them. 5 So that the economic condition of the farmer may be improved by the discovery of new industrial uses for surplus crops and waste materials, and develop improvements on present methods of utilization.
