Objects of the New Historical Society Recently Formed In Boston.
For the purpose of tracing the Irish element in the American of today a national association was formed in Boston recently. It is called the American Irish Historical society, and it was organized by the election of Admiral Meade as its first president. Other prominent citizens of Irish descent were chosen to fill the remaining offices, and now the society is ready for work. Just what this association aims at is best described in the preamble to its constitution and bylaws as follows: "Believing that the part taken in the settlement, foundation and upbuilding of this United States by the Irish race has never received proper recognition from historians, and inspired by love for the republic, a pride in our blood and forefathers and a desire for historic truth, this society has met and organized. Its mission is to give a plain recital of facts, to correct errors, to supply omissions, to allay passions, to shame prejudice and to labor for right and truth." Its objects and purposes are explicitly stated to be: "The study of American history generally; to investigate specially the immigration of the people of Ireland to this country, determine their numbers, examine the sources and learn the places of their settlement; to endeavor to correct erroneous, distorted and false views of history in relation to the Irish race in America; to encourage and assist the formation of local societies; to promote and foster an honorable and national spirit of patriotism; to place the results of its historical investigations and researches in acceptable literary form; to print, publish and distribute its documents, and to sift and discriminate every paper, sketch or document bearing on the society's line of work before the same is accepted and given official sanction." In due time an official historian will be appointed and a practical method of collecting and preserving documents will be perfected. Meetings will be held in various parts of the country and local branches organized in every city in the United States. It is expected that the movement will result in presenting to future students of American history a truer account of the part Irishmen have taken in building up the nation.
