Two Hunters
Make Trip Down
Karluk River

A trip down the winding Karluk River from the lake to the village of Karluk was made early this week by two men.

Ed Walters, hunter and photographer from Modesto, California, and Alf Madsen, big game guide and outfitter, made the 28 mile water journey in approximately eight hours.

"I believe this is the first time a non-resident hunter ever made the trip." Madsen said. He added that it was the first time he had ever made it by boat. The men used a canvas folding boat for the trip.

Walters arrived here three weeks ago and spent 10 days taking pictures and fishing at Madsen's Uganik Bay camp.

They returned to Kodiak and flew with Vince Daly to Karluk Lake where Walters shot a Kodiak bear.

Madsen said the first part of the trip they were able to use a two and one half Johnson outboard and made good time.

They stayed overnight near the Kodiak Conservation Club camp, reached from Larsen Bay by portage, and continued their trip the next day. Daly flew to Karluk village Tuesday and brought them to town.
