Full Text

Two removals of honest, faithful & competent officers have been recently made in our own midst. Henry F. Baker, Esq, has been removed as Postmaster at Winchester, Frederick county, and Richard Milton appointed in his stead. At Martinsburg, Berkeley county, John H. Likins, Esq., has been removed, and John W. Boyd appointed. It is difficult to tell which party are most incensed at these removals and appointments. The Democratic party, indeed the whole community feel, that they have lost most valuable and efficient officers, whilst the Whig party declare that the selections are odious to themselves, unjust to the community, and evidence of weakness and imbecility on the part of the appointing power. Some two months ago, the leading, prominent and influential Whigs in Winchester and neighborhood, voluntarily got up and circulated a petition in behalf of Mr. Baker, which was signed by every business Whig in the town. Notwithstanding this, however, he has been removed, without trial, without cause, in open violation of all pledges, against the wish of the community irrespective of party, and at a serious detriment to the public interest. Of the successors of Messrs. Baker and Likins we can only speak as from rumor, and shall therefore wait the indignant outburst of popular feeling, which will no doubt be furnished for publication, in their own communities.-Spirit of Jefferson
