BRAZIL REVOLUTION.

Rebel Warships Pursue the Government Cruiser Nictheroy.

FOREIGN VESSELS FOLLOW TO WITNESS THE ENGAGEMENT.

The Republica With Admiral Mello on Board Makes an Attempt to Enter Rio Harbor, But is Prevented by the Heavy Fire From the Forts—Hundreds of Deaths Daily From Yellow Fever Reported at Brazil's Capital City.

Special to the RECORD-UNION.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 21.—The rebel cruiser Aquidaban left the bay at 4 o'clock this morning to join the Republica, the latter having on board Admiral de Mello. The Aquidaban got under way during the darkness and at a speed of eight knots steamed through the channel and toward the harbor entrance, as if no such things as torpedoes and submarine mines were in existence. When nearing the forts at the entrance of the bay the rebel ship was discovered and the garrisons were called to arms. A hot fire was directed upon her, but the Aquidaban steamed steadily ahead and succeeded in passing the forts, although struck several times. The forts kept firing until she was out of range, but it is not believed any serious damage was inflicted. When some distance off shore the Aquidaban met the Republica and both vessels steamed in a southerly direction. It is reported on shore that the two rebel warships have gone in search of the Nictheroy, and the latter is not very far off. It is understood an American warship and one or more foreign vessels are to follow the Aquidaban and Republica to witness the engagement.

DE MELLO TRIES TO RE-ENTER THE HARBOR.

Buenos Ayres, Feb. 21.—The following advices have been received from Rio Janeiro: The insurgent warship Republica, with Admiral De Mello aboard, made an attempt to re-enter Rio Bay, but was prevented by the heavy fire of the forts.

Yellow fever is rapidly spreading here, and hundreds of deaths from the disease are reported daily.

Three officers of the Government army at Santos, who were suspected of treason, have been shot. The authorities are compelling foreigners to perform military service. The foreign Consuls have lodged with the Government energetic protests against the action.

The insurgent land forces have arrived at Itanhaem, in the province of Sao Paulo, and forty miles south of the city of Sao Paulo. A number of political prisoners have escaped from the Government jails and joined the rebels on the frontier of Parana.

HAVE TO LOOK TO THE AMERICAN SQUADRON FOR PROTECTION.

New York, Feb. 21.—A Rio Janeiro special to the World says: The insurgents refused to-day to allow a water-boat alongside the English merchant ship Nasmyth. The Captain of the ship appealed to the commander of the British squadron for safe conduct for the boat. The British commander refused.

The Nasmyth's Captain went to Admiral Benham, stated his case and asked protection for the water-boat.

Admiral Benham promptly granted the English Captain's request, and Lieutenant Kilburn conducted the water boat under American flags. The rebels did not fire upon the boat. The British squadron is roundly denounced. It has come to be the common saying that all nationalities must seek protection in the bay from the American squadron.
