Full Text

The 10th Vermont has done some "tall" marching in this campaign. Lieut. John A. Hicks writes his friends that the Regiment made lately one continuous march of 40 miles. We are permitted to make the following extract from Lieut. Hicks' letter.

"The night of the 12th we left Cold Harbor, about two o'clock as rear guard for the whole army: our Division being the rear of the corps, and our regiment the rear of the division: and before ten o'clock the next night we had marched across the Chickahominy by way of Jones, Bridge, a distance of 30 miles. Such courage and determination I never saw displayed, considering our condition. For nearly two weeks we have been continually under arms, catching sleep as we could, and for two nights before the move we had been changing position and moving nearly all night—and the pickets had kept awake all the time. Besides this the weather had been very warm, and the dust nearly blinding. Many, before they reached camp that night had the soles of their feet covered with blisters. At 3 o'clock the next morning, 13th, we started again, and at 9 o'clock had marched to Charles City Court House, 10 miles,—making about 40 miles since 2 A. M., of the 12th,—or in twenty-six hours."—Burlington Times.
