The following is copied from the Madras Gazette of Jan. 19.

Accounts are received by Government, of the entire defeat of one of Tippoo's principal detachments, commanded by a confidential General.

The following are the authenticated particulars which have yet come to hand.

On the 28th of December, Purseram Bhow, with a detachment of the Bombay army under Captain Little, fell in with a body of Tippoo's Forces, consisting of 10,000 Infantry, and 1500 Cavalry: which they routed with almost an incredible loss on the part of the enemy.

The action took place at Semogu; about one hundred and twenty miles to the northwest of Seringapatam, on the borders of the Bednor Country.

The general who commanded the Sultan's forces, ten guns, with the elephants, and all the camp equipage were taken.

Nothing is at present ascertained of our loss except that Lt. Ross of the Bombay establishment, and a handful of Europeans under his command, had fallen in the engagement.
