Asked $25,000; Gets $250 for Black Eye

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9.—Judgment for $250 in favor of Owen Bartlett, a house painter, against Teddy Hayes, trainer for Jack Dempsey, champion fighter, has been handed down. Bartlett sued for $25,000 damages. He alleged that Hayes blacked his eye; that Joseph Hiram Dempsey, the champion's brother, stood by and permitted it, and that Jack himself was financially responsible because he employed Joe and Teddy.

The court absolved Jack because he wasn't there and Joe because he acted as peacemaker.
