Materials For
Outdoor Furniture
Materials used on outdoor furniture must be tough to withstand Arizona weather and still be pliable enough for sewing or tacking, advises Grace Ryan, home management specialist for the Agricultural Extension Service at the University of Arizona.
While the material must be pliable enough for sewing or tacking, it also must be strong enough to support a good deal of weight.
The most important factor in porch and outdoor upholstery is the material, because it gets such hard wear. Here are suggestions for suitable materials:
Woven striped canvas, painted canvas, fabric-backed plastic, and a glass fiber-cloth which is coated with a synthetic rubber or with one of many plastics. Except for the glass-fiber cloth, which is the most expensive, other fabric prices will range from one to two dollars.
In general, canvas is waterproofed and mildew resistant for normal exposure. Fiber- backed plastics resist tearing, water, and stains, but will eventually dry out in Arizona. Glass-fiber cloth is waterproof and resists stains. Sun and temperature have little effect on it.
These fabrics range from 30 inches to 54 inches in width and you'll find that there is a rough outdoor fabric suited for each pocketbook.
