INTERESTING TALKS ARE MADE
BY BEN R. VARDAMAN
OF IOWA

Mr. Ben R. Vardaman, of Des Moines, Iowa, delivered two lectures at the Opera House last Friday. In the morning lecture he was introduced by Mr. W. H. Carter and addressed a small audience composed of business men, ladies of the city and the Franklin High School. His subject was "Community Building." He addressed himself for the most part to the school children.

In the evening lecture he was introduced by Pres. H. L. Whitfield and talked on business topics for more than an hour. It is much to be regretted that so few of our business men and practically none of our citizens cared to hear Mr. Vardaman for certainly the subjects he discussed are of vital importance to all of our people.

The business men's banquet after the evening lecture was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Mr. Vardaman's talk at the banquet aroused much more interest than either of his lectures.

Many of the problems of our business life were candidly discussed, questions asked, and some valuable information given. In his lecture and banquet talk, Mr. Vardaman said many good things among which were the following:

1. Get acquainted with your neighbor. You might like him.

2. The city that always smiles is the city that always grows.

3. It is not houses but men that make a city for men go where the business is.

4. Instead of spending money and time in the effort to get in additional manufactories and industries, develop the mutual friendship of your citizens, both city and country, and you will have to put up bars to keep the industries out.

5. Send your dollars away if you will but never forget that
