A DUEL WITH CLUBS.
A well-known citizen of Charleston, Mississippi County, Maine, gives some particulars of a remarkable assault case which occurred about two miles from that place a few days ago. The combatants were a white man and a colored man. They had a falling out, and on the spur of the moment they vented their anger by each seizing a club and knocking the other on the head. But one blow passed between them. They struck each other simultaneously, and both men fell to the ground perfectly stunned and apparently lifeless.
The singularity of the fight is owing to the fact that each was so intent on getting in his work on his opponent's head that neither attempted to ward off the other's blow, and to this intent it was a deadly combat. Instances in which the knife or firearms have been the weapons have occurred, resulting in death to both the combatants, but this is the first instance known in which the effect was produced by billets of wood. Both of the men were taken home by friends.
