THE federalists talk about protection of the HARBOR. They affect to blame the Administration for not fortifying the harbor, and hypocritically pretend they would have fortified it. Now suppose the Narrows had been fortified at the expense of five millions of dollars, is fortifying the Narrows fortifying the HOOK? But let us test their professions by their ACTS. Did they fortify when they were in power? NO.--Did they defend the harbor? NO. They raised STANDING ARMIES and expended MILLIONS to subjugate the country, but they did not fortify.--What did they expend in fortifying the harbor? Read, and determine on their attempts to impose on the community.
The federalists were in power, according to their own account, twelve years. What did they expend in fortifying our harbor during that long period? One hundred thousand dollars ONLY, and this was expended in a way so foolish, I mean by piece meal, that it was of NO SERVICE. What have the REPUBLICANS expended? Why, by the State Government, two hundred and twenty two thousand dollars. And what besides this, has Congress done? Congress, during the last session, appropriated one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. What is the inference from these facts? Why that the Republican Administration have done THREE TIMES more in fortifying than those who now profess so much. Away then with their pretensions--they are hypocritical--they are delusive--they are intended to betray
