Suspicious Actions of the Hungarian Miners at Maynard.
Readers of this paper will remember that on the evening of Saturday, December 26th, there was a big row among the Hungarian coal miners at Maynard, on the line of the C., L. & W. railroad, during which several men were badly beaten up, and one man was struck twice in the head with an axe, cutting two horrible gashes. The matter got into the papers, but there seemed to have been nothing more than a general row, not attended with any fatal results, and no one, even in the immediate neighborhood, paid much attention to the fracas, it being the apparent policy of the people in the vicinity to allow the foreigners to "fight it out," so long as they did not injure or interfere with anyone else.
Since Saturday it has developed that the row ended in at least one shot being fired, and the actions of the miners since then have led the people of the neighborhood to suspect that murder was committed during the fight. Two or three men, including the one hit with the axe, have left the place, and others have taken their tools out of the coal mine and are preparing to go. It is surmised that one of the wounded men died about Wednesday, as on Thursday the farmers in the neighborhood noticed an unusual commotion about the boarding house where the row occurred, and there were a number of stealthy and mysterious visits to the cellar of the house, the men going down there in couples, remaining a short time, and then coming up, to be succeeded by others. Friday the rumor got out among the citizens that the dead man had been buried in the cellar of the house, and there was a movement on foot to proceed to the house and make a search of the premises, but it came to nothing, and nothing has been done since, although the suspicion of a violent death is generally believed in.
