At a time when public Liberty is in Danger from Measures not so obvious as fatal to common Discernment, to show the Tendency of such Measures and their Repugnancy to the Rights and Privileges of a free People, is an Employment worthy the ablest Head and the most benevolent Heart. This has been lately done in a masterly Manner, by the Worthy and patriotic writer of the Farmer's Letters published in your Paper, which so highly deserve the Encomiums they universally meet. The Colonies on this Continent are under the greatest Obligation to this Gentleman, which common Gratitude oblige them to manifest by some publick Act. And I would propose that this Town at their next Meeting should take into Consideration, and adopt some proper Method to evince their Regard to a Gentleman who has so gloriously laboured for the common Good. Such a publick Tribute, (paid in this Case to exalted Merit) may answer a very valuable Purpose, further than that of proving to the World, that We are not destitute of the noblest Passion by which the human Breast is animated.
It may possibly excite other Gentlemen to exert themselves in the same Way, and thus be a Means of restoring and continuing that Liberty, which may gracious Heaven e'er long grant us fully to enjoy. Your's. A. B.
