AND EVALUATION WORK SHOPS

WORCESTER - Worcester Polytechnic Institute will conduct a series of at least three two-day fallout shelter design and evaluation workshops for architects and engineers before the end of June.

President Arthur B. Bronwell announced today that the college had signed a contract for the series with the federal government. The college will be reimbursed for costs of the workshops by the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization.

The workshop locations have yet to be designated, according to President Bronwell, but they will be in OCDM Region One, which includes the New England states, New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The workshops, or seminars, will be part of a nationwide series to be conducted by eight universities or colleges, one in each OCDM Region.

All will teach the fundamentals in design of shelter to protect against gamma radiation which would result from nuclear attack.

According to President Bronwell, there is increasing demand for instruction in the recently developed techniques of shelter design, especially from architects and engineers employed by government, consulting firms and private concerns.

It is pointed out that the rate of progress in the national shelter program depends in part on increasing capabilities of architects and engineers throughout the country to include fallout protection features in new building construction at reasonable costs.

Worcester Tech, according to President Bronwell, is to furnish personnel, facilities, materials and such other services as will be required to conduct the seminars.

Three of its civil engineering faculty now are at Battle Creek, Mich., taking an intensive two weeks course in fallout shelter design and Civil Defense orientation at the OCDM Staff College. They are Profs. Carl H. Koontz, head of the department; Joseph D. Sage and Graduate Assistant Ronald A. Carlson. They will return to Tech after March 10 and lay plans for the workshops in Region One in the next three months.
