Campaign at Marion Will
Occur Monday, October 18
CHICAGO, Ill., Oct. 4.—The climax to the remarkable "front porch" campaign will be reached Monday, October 18, when Senator Harding and Governor Coolidge will address the new presidential voters of the nation and when there is expected to be the greatest gathering in Marion of the campaign.
The candidate for president and the candidate for vice president will appear on the "front porch" together and both will speak while the addresses will be primarily to the new voters, young men and young women, the event will be one to which republicans generally will be invited.
Many thousands of people are expected to go by automobile and train to Marion for this meeting. Those in charge of it say that present indications are 125,000 to 150,000 people will go. Whole caravans of automobiles for the occasion are already being organized in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and, in fact, in all the states within easy reach of Marion by auto routes. Many special trains will also carry visitors.
"America First" will be the slogan of the day. A great drive is on to make it a record breaker of this or any other campaign. It is the expectation and desire of those in charge of this extraordinary gathering that every state in the union have a delegation present. Not only will Senator Harding and Governor Coolidge speak but it is expected that hundreds of leading republicans from all over the country will attend. It may be impossible for all of the visitors to get within range of the "front porch," and it is planned to have whatever overflow meetings are necessary addressed by some of the foremost public men in the party. An old-fashioned barbecue will be arranged.
While the meeting will be republican, on the other hand, the invitation to attend is general regardless of partisanship. This is especially true of the new voters. Young men and young women regardless of partisan views or predictions are cordially asked to be present. The campaign is now drawing to a close and the republican party chooses this occasion to recognize the new voters who will in the course of time become the leaders in national affairs. The addresses of both candidates will be lessons in patriotism rather than partisan appeals.
It is anticipated the outpouring from the states immediately adjoining Ohio will be especially heavy. Not long ago a West Virginia day was arranged at Marion. This brought out nearly 500 auto loads of visitors from West Virginia, aside from many that made the trip by train. It is calculated that if this could be done with respect to a single state, the October 18 meeting will bring out a crowd that will far exceed even the crowd of notification day.
