Full Text

Colonel Ackland did not die in consequence of a fall from his horse, as mentioned in several papers, but from the following singular accident: During his service in America, a misunderstanding had arisen between him and Captain Lloyd, which at length became of so serious a nature, that they mutually agreed to settle it by fighting the first convenient opportunity; the Colonel however being taken prisoner by the Americans, they were thus separated, and he came over to England on his parole. A few days since Captain Lloyd likewise arrived, and immediately went down in pursuit of Colonel Ackland, whom he found at his seat in Devon. They met immediately, and exchanged a pistol each without effect; they then drew their swords, and made several passes at each other, till the Colonel making a lunge at his adversary, slipped up, and fell upon a pavement with his forehead, which caused an immediate concusion of the brain, and he expired in the greatest agonies in less than three hours. Thus by the most singular, and unfortunate circumstance, the publick have lost the services of as gallant a soldier, and worthy a country Gentleman, as Great Britain ever knew.
