Giant Statehood Petition

HONOLULU. (P) An estimated 5,000 persons Wednesday signed a half-ton, 5-foot-wide petition asking Congress to approve statehood for Hawaii.

A downtown city block was closed off for three hours as the petition—a roll of newsprint mounted on a truck bed—was unfurled along the center of the pavement.

The Royal Hawaiian Band was playing and hula girls were dancing. Gov. King headed the signers.

The petition will be circulated through the other islands and then flown to Washington. It is sponsored by a citizens' committee.
