PHILADELPHIA, JAN. 2.

Extract of a letter to the editor of the
AURORA. FORT STODDART, (M. T.)
DEC. 5, 1810.

The Spaniards under the command
of gov. Folch, are yet in possession of
Pensacola, as well as Mobile. The
British and French, I am persuaded,
have each of them an eye to these places,
they are likewise menaced by the
new government of Baton Rouge;
professed representative of which called
col Kemper, has lately collected a
force of choice spirits on our side of the
line near this place, consisting of about
60 men among whom are some of
the territorial militia officers, one as
high in rank as major—J P. Kennedy—
they have been for several days encamped
in sight of the town of Mobile,
on the east side of the bay. They
had confined their depredations, to hog,
poultry, and other provisions, when we
last heard of them, which was yesterday.
They are waiting for a reinforcement
from the new settlements on the
United States public land, at the fork of
the Alabama and Tombigby, to which
place they had despatched a colonel
Callier, and some others—The colonel
promised to raise 100 men—he, however,
unfortunately for his mission, exposed
his project to some well disposed citizens,
who have furnished grounds for
a warrant from judge Toulmin. The recruiting
service will consequently be suspended,
and I entertain great hopes that Mr. Kemper
and his followers, may be forced to abandon
their enterprize; and as we have no use for
such people here, I trust they will all go together,
to any other place where they may be wanted.

Gov. Folch is disposed to do every
thing in his power to effect a transfer
of the Floridas to the United States
We cannot hesitate about receiving the
country, from the officers of Spain, but
surely we shall rather take, than receive
it from the new government of Baton
Rouge.
