THE Senate did not sit on Saturday.
In The House some time was spent before a quorum was formed.
Mr. Hamilton, from the Select Committee on Retrenchment, reported a bill to abolish the offices of Second Comptroller, and one of the Auditors in the War Department, and to regulate certain officers; and for other purposes.
It was read a first and second time, and referred to the same Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union, as the bill recently reported by Mr. Hamilton, for the establishment of a tribunal for the investigation and adjustment of claims upon the Government.
Mr. Smyth's proposed amendment to the Constitution came up, when Mr. Condict submitted a modification to the resolution providing that the term of four years, for which the President is at present elected, shall be prolonged to six years.
The amendment was opposed by Sargeant, who spoke till the hour elapsed.
The rest of the day, as is usual on Saturdays, was spent in the discussion of private bills.
