Libel Suit.-On Tuesday last, came on for trial in Washington County Court, Judge Ellis presiding, the cause of Nicholas Baylies, Esq. vs. Thomas Reed, jr. Esq. for an alleged libel in an article published in this paper over the signature of "A Member of the Bar," containing strictures on the management of the late State's Attorney from this county, in his prosecutions for the sale of lottery tickets. Timothy Morrill and D. Azro A. Buck, Esqrs. counsel for the plaintiff; William Upham and Denison Smith, Esqrs. for the defendant. The defendant, on trial, admitted that he was the author of the communication, and justified by giving the truth in evidence. The cause excited much interest, and was ably managed by the counsel on both sides, and occupied the Court two days. The jury brought in a verdict of acquittal, and found for the defendant to recover his costs.--Gazette.
