Phyllis Wheatley's camp program for this summer came to an end when 55 tired and tanned, but happy girl-campers returned from their 8-day stay at beautiful Camp Clearfork, according to Mrs. Sue C. Williams, chairman of the camp committee.
The committee was pleased with the high morale of the campers and with the wonderful cooperation of all campers, counselors, cooking staff and life guards.
Mrs. Alexander, camp director, announced the honors which were awarded at the close of the period as follows: most all-around campers: Gloria Pierce and Mary Scott; most cooperative, Harriet Pipes; Best kept cabin: cabin 3; Most cooperative campers as a group: cabin 3 and 4; Neatest campers: Almeta Lanum, Thelma Davis and Delores Warren; Most cooperative campers in cabin 3, Yvonne Richardson; cabin 4 whole group; cabin 5, Almeta Lanum, Carolyn Finn, Betty Harris; cabin 6, Lily Harvey; cabin 7, Delores Warren, Bennie Lou Bass; cabin 8, Marva Faye Smith, Harriet Pipes; Miss Clearfork Harriet Pipes; Little Miss Clearfork, Mary Virginia Scott and Betsy Ann Carpentier.
Mrs. R. A. Glaseo in her inimitable manner, kept the campers amply fed with an abundance of luscious food. She was assisted by Mrs. Picola Harris and Mrs. Sue C. Williams. Mrs. Thelma Minton worked tirelessly as nurse to keep the girls fit. Mrs. Ruby MeCoy was camp treasurer and in charge of the dining room and also senior discussion leader. Other counselors were Miss Bettye Moore, devotions; Mrs. Mollie Vault, junior girls discussion leader; Misses Beatrice Moore and Anne Waugh, dramatics and folk dancing; Misses Nell Cooper and Rosalyn Finn, nature study and outdoor games. Mrs. I B. Childs, music; Mrs. L. M. Walker headed the handicraft and Mrs. Eloise Green and Mrs. Bernice Bass assisted. Mrs. Green also had charge of cabin inspection.
The water-front staff, headed by Max Green included Walter Long, Harry Caldwell and Thomas Nolan, III.
