Full Text

Passion Week.-With last Sabbath, Palm Sunday, or the Sunday before Easter, commenced the last week of the Fast of Lent, commonly called Passion Week, or Holy Week, so designated from the fact of its being devoted to the commemoration of the closing events in the life of the Redeemer. On Palm Sunday, the entrance of Christ into Jerusalem, when, as the gospels record, 'the multitude spread their garments in the way, and others cut down branches off the trees and strewed them in the way. and they that went before and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord!' On the succeeding days his betrayal, the institution of the Lord's Supper, his condemnation, crucifixion, death and burial. The season ends with Saturday, Easter eve, when the solemn services peculiar to this occasion of humiliation, fasting and prayer, give place to the great and joyous festival of Easter. The Paschal moon, which regulates this festival only became full on Sunday morning, and thus Easter occurs this year later than at any period for more than fifty years past, and is nearly as late as it can ever occur.
