Never before in the history of the country has cyclones, tornadoes and storms been so frequent, so disastrous and so destructive as this year.
We hear of water spouts in one section and drouths in another which may be traced to the same cause that produces the cyclone, and that cause is the wanton and vandal destruction of American forests.
The sawmill has given free passage to the blizzard and the tornado, and unless the woodman be restrained, and the planting of forests be encouraged, our climate will undergo radical changes and atmospheric disturbance become the normal condition.
Empires of lands in Asia once fertile are now deserts because men in past ages, as now in America, supposed their mission in life was to fell every tree they could lay ax to, and unless a new policy be adopted a great part of our country now teeming with energetic population will deteriorate as did the valley of the Guadalquivir in Spain.
Every State Legislature and National Congress should enact measures to protect American forests and to encourage the planting of other forests to take the place of those wantonly destroyed.- Louisville Times.
