OKMULGEE MANAGER GUILTY
Dispute Over a Decision in Yesterday's
Game Led to The Argument and
Assault.
Following an altercation over a decision rendered by Umpire McKee in
yesterday's game between Tulsa and
Okmulgee, the umpire was assaulted
in a crowded street car returning to
town after the game, by Frank Gardiner,
manager of the Okmulgee club.
McKee was struck in the face and
knocked down. Several stitches were
taken in his forehead by a physician
afterward. McKee, however, is not
injured seriously enough to be in bed
and he stated last night that he would
officiate at this afternoon's game at
Athletic park.
Last night McKee officially notified
President Leo Meyer, of the Okla-
homa State League, at Oklahoma City,
of the trouble, and Meyer is expected
to arrive in Tulsa today to gather the
facts concerning the assault. It is
probable that Gardiner will be given a
heavy fine and suspended for several
days or indefinitely. His offense is
one of the most serious that could
possibly occur in organized baseball.
McKee and Gardiner have been per-
sonal friends for several years. Gar-
diner was a baseball umpire when he
first knew McKee and the two men
have worked together in hundreds of
games. In the last inning of yester-
day's game Norman Price of the
Tulsa team was hit in the side by a
slow pitched ball, and McKee allowed
him to go to first base. Gardiner
made a wild protest at the time. On
a Sand Springs car that was crowded
with fans, returning home from the
game, Gardiner told McKee that the
rules did not give a batter first base
when he was hit by a slow ball. Mc-
Kee made some reply and Gardiner
struck him.
