TARTLY DENOUNCED
For Sycophantic Play for the Support of Magazine Writers.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Feb. 3.-A dinner of the Periodical Publishers' Association did not break up until an early hour here today.
Its close was marked by tart denunciation of Senator LaFollette, who had earlier in the evening attacked the sincerity of the newspapers, by Don C. Seitz, of the American Newspaper Publishers' Association, who declared that the newspapers had been "foolishly, wickedly and untruthfully assailed."
LaFollette made no sign of hearing the caustic remarks.
Discussing the incident today, Seitz said:
"Last night's dinner during which we thought we would josh the statesman ended in a calamity. It was a tragedy for LaFollette. It simply wiped him off the map.
"Undoubtedly he came to make the speech of his life, and when it developed into an infamous slander of newspapers and a wallowing sycophantic praise of magazines, I realized that the man had overstepped the mark.
"In my mind Senator LaFollette came to the dinner to attack the newspapers and to curry favor with magazine publishers."
