The Operation of the Free System in Trinidad.—We have been favored by a friend with files of late Trinidad papers, from which we gather some interesting information in relation to the operation of the Free System of labor in that island.
At a recent meeting of the Council of Government, the returns of the revenue of the colony for 1838, were submitted. From these it appeared that in 1831 the revenue was £31,000, £9,000 of which was derived from the Slave Tax: while in 1838, without the Slave Tax, the revenue had amounted to £18,750—since which year it has considerably increased. The following extract has a bearing upon this subject:
EXTRACT OF A LETTER, DATED
Port Spain, Trinidad, Feb. 27, 1841.
'Three gentlemen of the Society of Friends have arrived here from Philadelphia, and have been introduced to our Governor, Sir H. M'Leod, with whom, and the country, its prospects, and entire success of American immigration and the free system, they seem perfectly delighted; and if it depended on them, all the American people of color would come to this island. They have proceeded to many parts of the country, which they have inspected, examining the cottages, &c., one of them mentioned that a common American laborer had, including every advantage, earned seven hundred and fifty dollars in a year. They have taken notes of all the information which they obtained, and carry with them documents signed by parties which will contradict the errors published by Yates and Hunt; and as the immigrants seem to be fast accumulating and doing full work, and most of them highly pleased, I consider the experiment eminently successful; and although we receive loads of immigrants from the other colonies daily, the demand is unabated; it is certainly wonderful, as the Island was never so prosperous as at present, and it is a proud day for the abolitionists, when they can contrast the present state of Trinidad and that in which it was on the day of emancipation.'
