A CLUSTER OF CURLS

Only a cluster of golden curls,
Only a bundle of bliss:
Only the laughter of little blue eyes.
Only her red lips to kiss.
Only the ripple of morning divine
O'er golden and beautiful hair—
Only the patter of two little feet
Like tinkle of bells on the stair.
Only a chubby and deep-dimpled fist,
Only a baby's bright smile:
Only a hope of a happier day
Adown the whole length of the mile.
Only a titter of infantile glee.
The sound of a romp and a rush—
Only the sweet of a little one's life
Beaming down o'er the toiling world's hush.
Only these simple and homespun things.
But, masters,
keep step to the strain—
How strong and how true is the purpose of life
When it marches to childhood's refrain!
Only a cluster of golden curls.
But, ah, what a comfort it brings
When under its glory and beauty and truth
The heart of a little child sings!
