The province of Texas, although belonging to the Republic of Mexico, has, for a long time, been a sort of neutral ground between that country and the United States. Its population is represented as the most heterogeneous mass of human beings that were ever congregated together--composed, in the language of scripture, of all 'kindreds and tongues,' and from every quarter of the earth. Amongst this motley assemblage it may readily be supposed that but few can be found, who have been induced to emigrate thither through very honest motives. Of course, the whole country has been constantly kept in a state of disturbance, so that the Mexican government, weak and distracted as it is, had determined to reduce the inhabitants into something like regular and wholesome subjection.-- Accordingly, in the latter part of April, four vessels, with about three hundred and fifty men, arrived at Matamoras from Vera Cruz, for the purpose of laying the foundation of an orderly government. Twelve hundred men and eight pieces of artillery were expected there from Monterey. General Filisola, the Mexican general who is entrusted with the command of the forces destined for this service, will find an ugly business before him. There are a great many old Kentuckians in Texas, who would just as soon fight Filisola and his Mexican soldiers as eat their breakfasts.
